The agricultural world

The Municipality of Franklin had 82 farmers in 2010. Agriculture in the territory is mainly focused on the cultivation of fruit; mainly apples, and maple syrup. Farmers in Franklin are younger than those in the MRC with an average age of 45 compared to 54 elsewhere. The average age of the farmer may explain why Franklin agriculture is diversified in terms of agritourism.
A large proportion of farmers offer activities related to agriculture such as agritourism (21%), product processing (20%) and many sell products directly on the farm (28%). These participation rates in related activities are much higher than what is observed at the MRC level where only 5% of farms offer activities related to agritourism, 6% processing on the farm and 9% selling products directly on their farm. In addition, 18 of the 25 farms in the region offering pick-your-own are located in Franklin.
